The axis on which our story turns is baby LaFayette DeFord Johns born in 1851 to Philip Johns and Lavina DeFord Johns. Philip was a first generation German immigrant, and Lavina was a forth generation American of mixed European lineage, primarily French, Scotch, and Scotch-Irish. Philip and Lavina set out on the Oregon Trail with baby LaFayette in the early 1850s, looking for land and gold. Philip captured much of the times in his own writings, put down in 1899, and lost to the the family and others until this time.
Philip’s Life and Travels is supplemented with LaFayette’s letters from cross country travels in 1905 and 1913, and documents of succeeding generations who are looking for a way to connect with their roots. One American Revolution patriot, ending with our latest 3 year old little boy, though key moments in American history. This is the active part of the mystery which lives in all United States
